Woodward Cave – FREE Tour
The Woodward Cave tour was a HUGE hit last year! Many commented that it’s more informative, exciting and interesting than…let’s just say…other local cave tours. Many on the tour last year said they were excited to bring people back to see it! So, we’re excited to do it again in 2026.
Did you know that Woodward Cave was used as a prison? That David Lewis, the Robin Hood of PA, used it to store stolen goods? That it’s one of Pennsylvania’s largest caverns and home to PA’s largest stalagmite? That over a thousand bats hibernate in the cave (don’t worry, they’re not there now!)? You’ll hear tails of the cave along with tons of facts about the formations you’ll see along the tour.
What to Bring:
- Sneakers/Boots: For the Cave tour (no opened toed shoes and bike shoes are tough to walk in)
- Sweatshirt: For the cave tour – it’s a crisp 48 degrees in the cave year round.
- Bike, Helmet, Waterbottle: for the ride!
Details:
- Park – use the gravel lot beside the Millheim Fire Co. Please DO NOT park directly behind the fire company, as it’s reserved for fire fighters.
- Meet/Check-in on the back patio of The Meandering Mallard Coffee Shop (accessible from the alley on the other side of Millheim Fire Co.)
- Fee – None! The Cave Tour will be FREE!
Schedule:
- 9:45am – 10:10am – Check in on the patio of Meandering Mallard Coffee Shop (arrive early to grab a coffee and/or breakfast!).
- 10:15am – Bike Ride from the Meandering Mallard to Woodward Cave. We’ll take Penn Street/Coburn Rd to Pine Creek Rd. (6.4 miles)
- 11:00am – Cave Tour…Additional tour times will be added if there is growing interest. Tours are approximately 45 min.
- Following the tour, you can ride back to Millheim on your own. Elk Creek Cafe will be open, as will the Meandering Mallard Coffee Shop.
Can’t make this event? Go to Woodward Cave on your own any time from Memorial Day to Labor Day (closed the rest of the year for bat conservation initiatives). Every Friday, Woodward Cave has music and food from 6-8pm, and FREE tours for kids 12U accompanied by an adult. Saturdays, you can visit their farmers market from 10am-2pm.
